Crusaders to share Racecourse

By Organic Bull

Rugby League Team Crusaders have come to the rescue of Wrexham Football Club with a deal that will see them play 11 games at the Racecourse in 2010.

"The deal is very important for the future of Wrexham FC. The club cannot survive if only 1,800 fans are coming through the gates," commented Wrexham's Paul Retout.

"We needed to do something to diversify and to protect the Racecourse going forward.

"This is a massive coup for Wrexham and for North Wales.

"For example, we're expecting Leeds Rhinos to bring around 4,000 fans for the first match at the Racecourse on 29 January and make a weekend of it.

"It would be fantastic to have 10,000 fans rocking the Racecourse just like the old days.

"We needed to do something to diversify and to protect the Racecourse going forward. Actions speak louder than words."

The Crusader's original base was at the Brewery Field, Bridgend.

Allen officially leaves Cheltenham

By ExLandlord

Sky Sports are this evening reporting that Martin Allen has now parted company, by mutual consent, with Cheltenham Town. The controversial manager has been on “gardening leave” for the last couple of months but The Club has today confirmed that he has now finally departed.

Allen was reported to have racially abused a nightclub doorman although Police have never pressed charges. The Club, in the meantime, have conducted their own enquiry prior to today’s announcement.

"Naturally I am very pleased with the outcome in terms of being found innocent of the charges but it is unfortunate that it has not been possible for me to remain at the club as manager," said Allen in a statement.

"I would like to thank Cheltenham for giving me a fair hearing and the LMA for all of their support, including the legal team at Russell Jones & Walker, during this difficult period."

John Schofield has been in temporary charge of team affairs since during Allen’s enforced absence and it seems he will continue in the role for the time being.

Wembley would be Fantastic for Everyone

By Organic Bull

No doubt although tomorrow's League game at Macclesfield is currently uppermost in John Trewick's thoughts, he has spoken of his hopes the Bulls can get past MK Dons next Tuesday in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Section Semi-final.

"It's a great distraction from the League," Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "It's a competition a lot more teams are taking seriously now.

"I think to get to the area final would be terrific for everybody, supporters, staff, everyone involved and we will try and do that.

"I'm sure MK Dons will be trying to do exactly the same thing because I think if you can get through to a Wembley appearance it would be fantastic for everybody. A great day out for supporters.

"At the end of the day if you go to Wembley and win it's a trophy and recognition for people's achievements.

"So we will certainly trying to win the match next Tuesday.

Ainsworth has All the Assets says Clark

By Organic Bull

Former Hereford United winger Lionel Ainsworth has all the assets to make a career for himself at Huddersfield says manager Lee Clark.

"I look at Shaun Wright-Phillips and Aaron Lennon and they aren't quicker than Lionel and they don't have a better technique than Lionel," said Clark.

"What Lionel has to do, and I've spoken to him about this and he understands, is to take the form he shows on the training ground into matches - because that is where it counts and determines whether you stay in the team.

"I have every faith in Lionel. Before I became manager here I saw him play for Hereford, and my first match in charge here was against Hereford and Lionel was very impressive - which is one of the reasons we decided to bring him here.

"We have seen his ability in flashes, but we now need to see it on a more consistent basis because he is a fantastic athlete, frighteningly quick and he possesses great technique with either foot."

Bell Adds To Macc Woes

By Bobo

Macclesfield have a series of injury problems ahead of the visit of the Bulls on Saturday.

Midfielder Lee Bell has been ruled out for at least six weeks after a cartilage tear was confirmed in a knee, while Hamza Bencherif's fractured ankle is now expected to rule him out for the season. Shaun Brisley is suspended after being sent off last week, while striker Ricky Sappleton and midfielder Ross Draper are both struggling to be fit.

Boss Keith Alexander has told the local press that his young side have to start showing their worth: "How the players react to the second half of the season will tell me a lot about them. I've been saying that these are still young lads but now they've had 20-odd games and they're not young in terms of a football team anymore. They've got to go out there and start playing and start getting some points on the board."

One player expected to play on Saturday is John Rooney. The younger brother of Wayne is attracting a number of scouts and Alexander told the BBC: "People are looking at him every week. We will do well to hang on to him in January and I would be surprised if my phone is not red hot."

Youth team coach John Askey also spoke to the BBC: "John has got a fantastic touch, that and his passing ability is the best I have seen for someone of his age. Then there is his awareness - in terms of his footballing brain he is streets ahead of a lot of other players."

Macclesfield are favourites for the game with 13/8 available, while the Bulls are a best-priced 9/5. The draw is 12/5.

The Administrators report into Chester, the bankrupt company left behind when the club restarted itself in the summer, says the Administrators have filed a report with the Director's Disqualification Unit about the conduct of the club's directors prior to the Administration. Among those directors at the time was the claimed current owner Stephen Vaughan Junior.

Notts County's former vice chairman John Mounteney has expressed concern about Munto Finance putting the club up for sale. Mounteney was 10% shareholder of the club, and is unhappy that Munto are looking to profit from the deal so soon after he handed his shares over free of charge. Supporters Direct have also told the press they were against the summer transfer of shares as the deal cut the Supporters Trust out of the picture entirely.

Four Marine players have been banned for betting on matches they were involved in. The four - Lee Parle, Adam Farley, Paul Woolcott and Freddie Potter - placed bets between £20 and £300 on two fixtures in March 2008 and April 2009. They have received bans of between five and nine months, and fines of up to £250. Woolcott, who admitted the charges straight away, had most of his ban and fine suspended.

Cheltenham "Are Garbage"

By Bobo

Cheltenham Town striker Julian Alsop has confirmed what most people already thought - Cheltenham Town "are garbage".

Speaking to the local press he confirmed: "To be honest we've been garbage. We've been alright in one game and bad in three games, it's got to be the other way round and more than that."

Cheltenham have won only once in 14 games and are still uncertain of the future of manager Martin Allen, who has now been on 'gardening leave' for two months. Temporary boss John Schofield is planning for the January transfer window and beyond: "At the minute I am running the club and I have to have long term plan. Ideally I'd like to bring players in for 18 months and put a base down for what's going to happen so I will start speaking to players who are out of contract."

The Robins have only one player, youngster Marley Watkins, on contract for next season.

Trewick looks forward to Macclesfield.

By Organic Bull

Hereford United manager John Trewick has given a few words to the Worcester News in advance to tomorrow's League Two match at Macclesfield.

Trewick said he realised Macclesfield had not won any of their last seven games.

“I don’t tend to look too closely at statistics," he said.

“I think we have to treat the opposition with respect and keep our own house in order.

“Generally speaking, over the last dozen matches or so, we have done quite well.

“We have had the odd blip over the course of the season but that happens.

“We didn’t play particularly well against a good side on the day in Notts County last Saturday but we’ll put that behind us.

“We’ll look to go to Macclesfield and keep the same level of performance we showed against Northampton in our last away game.

“If we do that, I will be happy.”

On the injury front Darren Jones returned to training yesterday afer a knee injury and should be fit. Likewise Danny Blanchett who has a groin problem.

However the Bulls may have to give Ryan Green a fitness test before the game he is reported to be still suffering from a thigh problem.

Jordon Mutch in Young Blues Defeat

By Organic Bull

Currently on loan with Hereford United, Jordon Mutch did his career little harm last night when he played for Birmingham under 18's against Manchester United under 18's in an FA Youth Cup-tie.

Whilst the Reds won the tie 2-0, Mutch was mentioned in reports.

The game which was played at Atrincham last night in cold conditions.

Mutch played in mid-field and after a slow start by the Blues, he started to 'pull the strings'.

Later he stung the Reds keeper with a 'shot from range'.

Despite playing last night it is thought he will be available for selection by John Trewick for the Bulls game at Macclesfield tomorrow.

Turner advises Eriksson

By Organic Bull

Hereford United chairman Graham Turner spent some time talking to Notts County's Sven Goran Eriksson last Saturday in the boardroom at Edgar Street about his time as both chairman and director of football of the Bulls.

"I had a conversation with Sven in the boardroom after Saturday’s game," Turner told the Mirror.

“He is very much enjoying his role as director of football.

“That must be evident otherwise he wouldn’t be interested in taking over in the future.

“And he is well capable of carrying out both roles as he is steeped in football.

“Notts County have a good infrastructure and team so he could well take them into the Championship at least.

“They have a good support base and the ingredients are there for success.

“I am sure Sven can see that which is why he is interested in helping takeover the club.

“And it would certainly be terrific for Notts County.

“But being a shareholder and helping run the team is not without it’s headaches and was a nightmare in the early years at Hereford.”

News Round Up

By Bobo

Aldershot are replacing long serving goalkeeper coach Paul Priddy with former Portsmouth stopper Alan Knight. Priddy has spent 15 years with the club but cannot commit the time needed by new boss Kevin Dillon, who worked with Knight at Portsmouth. Torquay's FA Cup match with Stockport will now be held at Macclesfield's Moss Rose ground next Tuesday, with Stockport's pitch due to be relaid.

King's Lynn have officially folded, but local speedway supremo Buster Chapman says he is interested in reviving the club and running it alongside his King's Lynn Stars team. A late Chapman bid for the club failed as he had no limited company to make the offer. Unibond side Worksop are the latest to make budget cuts. They have asked the entire playing squad to take substantial reductions after a fall in income at the club.

Histon midfielder Neil Andrews has quit the club in the wake of Steve Fallon's suspension as manager. Bury manager Alan Knill says his club cannot afford to shop for players in the Conference, saying the £10-£15,000 transfer fees his side can afford are not enough to get a Conference player.

Oldham are to sell tickets for Saturday's home game with Exeter for just £2 for adults, with tickets available on the day. Gates have fallen as low as 3,600 at Boundary Park this season, with the club getting over 10,000 when they last offered a cheap ticket two years ago.

Shrewsbury to offer Tickets for Troops

By Organic Bull

Shrewsbury Town are to offer 'Tickets for Troops' starting with their home game against Grimsby Town.

The troops will walk around the pitch ahead of the game before be being presented to their fans. They will then form a 'guard of honour' for the two teams.

'Tickets for Troops' aim is for tickets to be made available to soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. All serving military personnel and any veterans who have been medically discharged through injury since 2001 qualify for tickets.

"Tickets for Troops is an excellent initiative and one which the club will do all it can to promote," said a Shrewsbury spokesman.

"Serving personnel will be able to obtain a ticket for a home game by presenting their warrant card at the ticket office ahead of a game."

Gates are Cause for Concern says Trewick

By Organic Bull

In his latest column for the Hereford Times, John Trewick has expressed his view that the attendances at Edgar Street are a cause for concern.

"We had around 2,700 there on Saturday of which 450 came from Nottingham while for our previous game, the gate was around 2,200," said the Hereford United manager.

"Even for the Shrewsbury game, we only had around 2,300 of our own supporters in the ground.

"We are all aware of the financial difficulties in the world at the moment and we are certainly not the only ones who are seeing gates drop a little.

"In the current financial climate, people are watching how and where they spend their money and that is understandable.

"When it comes down to the nitty-gritty, football is not immune from what is happening in the rest of the world. But, as we all know, it is in the difficult times that we have to stick together and work even harder to achieve our common goal."

President's Bar at Macclesfield

By Organic Bull

Hereford United supporters will be able to partake in light refreshment at the President's Bar at Moss Road on Saturday.

The President's Bar in the McAlpine Stand at the Moss Rose is open for business this weekend, with hot food available and the screens showing the Stoke/Wigan game live.

Home and away fans are welcome so why not join us in the bar for a pre-match drink or two and a chat with some fellow football fans.

New Regional BBC Football Programme

By Organic Bull

The BBC has unveiled a new weekly Football League magazine show tailored to each individual region around the UK.

Titled Late Kick Off, the BBC One programme will have different versions for each of the UK's seven main regions - the North West, North East and Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, West and East Midlands, the East, London and South East, and the South West. Each region will have its own presentation team.

Starting on January 18, 2010, at 11.15pm, the show will feature match highlights and also give fans "in-depth coverage" from behind-the-scenes of clubs in the league.

BBC controller of English regions David Holdsworth said: "Late Kick Off is good news for Football League fans who'll get to see more of their local teams on television but in a way they may not have seen before.

"They'll get to see the goal action but we'll also examine stories and issues of the day from a different perspective, providing high-quality sports journalism. Added to that we will be going behind the scenes at the clubs giving an insight in to what really goes on, with access to players, managers and backroom staff."

In August, coverage from the Football League returned to the BBC for the first time since 1988. Late Kick Off will run in conjunction with The Football League Show and live coverage of the League Cup semi-finals and final.

Sven To Buy Magpies?

By Bobo

Rumours are surfacing that Sven Goran Ericsson is to buy or, at least, front a bid to buy Notts County.

The Mirror claims the club has been put up for sale by owners Munto Finance for £3million, with the Telegraph suggesting that Executive Chairman Peter Trembling is assembling a group to buy the club - with Ericsson an interested party.

Ericsson remains in deadlock over his paycheck from Munto, which represents the majority of his wages for representing the League Two side, while rumours persist that Munto are not as rich as they originally claimed.

The press have run articles debunking claims from the mysterious Middle Eastern based group ever since they appeared on the scene. Claimed investors have refuted the suggestion that they have been involved in the project, while a complex ownership tangle has seen even the likes of Bernie Ecclestone deny them access to his sport because they were unable to provide acceptable proof of funds. The likes of Sol Campbell and the - slightly less stellar - Matt Lorenzo have walked out within weeks of high profile appointments due to the reality apparently not matching the brochure.

Some even suggest that Munto have not invested a single penny into the club - using a series of outlandish statements and legally dubious documents to get the club for nothing, then signing a series of players to lucrative contracts on the hope of doubling gates to cover the wages. The 'ploy' has almost worked, with gates at the club up 74% - bucking the League Two trend by some considerable distance even if results on the pitch have not been quite so impressive.

Should Munto wish to clear out as fast as they arrived then the 'ploy' (if there was one) may have worked. Their owners, who may - or may not - involve the convicted fraudster Russell King, depending on which document presented to which organisation you prefer to believe, would walk away with the £3million asking price with a negligible visible investment.

Nice work, if you can get it.

What's Happened to Dennehy?

By Organic Bull

Darren Dennehy, the young loanee defender from Cardiff City, hasn't been mentioned on Bulls News for several weeks and, as far as is known, there has been no reports of any fresh injury to the player.

However he wasn't involved in the reserve game against Swansea City this afternoon. In fact he hasn't played for the Bulls since the Paint Trophy game against Bournemouth on September 29th when he came on as a sub but sustained an injury late in the game.

On October 30th he was reported to be back in training. And he played twice for the Irish under 21 squad in Mid-November.

Then he was an un-used sub against Burton on November 21st.

Since then nothing.

His loan spell at Edgar Street officially finishes at the beginning of next month.

Constantine hits the Target

By Organic Bull

Below is a short report on this afternoon's friendly between Hereford United and Swansea City edited from the Swans OS.

It took Guillem Bauza just seven minutes of his return to find the scoresheet but he was handed a bit of luck.
After shrugging off two defenders inside the area he fired past the 'keeper only to see his attempt bounce back off the post, but luckily the ball fell back at his feet and he was on target second time around.
The Bulls did level proceedings midway through the half, former Southend and Port Vale striker Leon Constantine hitting the target, but Bauza added a second on the half-hour as he was set-up by Scott Evans.
Chad Bond completed the first-half rout on the stroke of half-time, Wales Under-21 international Jazz Richards picked him out from the right and his strike flew underneath the legs of the goalkeeper.
There were no goals in the second period but Bauza did come close to grabbing his hat-trick on two occasions. With 70 minutes played he saw a shot blocked by defender Craig Jones while an attempt five minutes from time was gathered by the goalkeeper.

Young Swans For Bulls Game

By Bobo

Swansea have named a young side for this afternoon's reserve match against the Bulls at Edgar Street.

The side includes Spaniard Guillem Bauza, with the striker making his first start after four months out with a knee injury, and first teamer Marcos Painter but the remainder of the line up are young professionals and a member of their youth side.

The Bulls have also named a fairly young side with youth team keeper Matt Gwynne, first year pro's Joel Edwards and Tyler Weir, and the returning Craig Jones all starting the game.

Swans side: David Cornell, Jazz Richards, Daniel Sheehan, Radanfah Abu Bakr, Marcos Painter, Adam Orme, Matty Collins (C), Scott Evans, Casey Thomas, Chad Bond, Guillem Bauza. Subs: Daniel Alfei, Lee Lucas, Jordan Prosser, Jordan Smith, Matthew Whatley.

Bulls side from OS: Matt Gwynne, James McQuilkin, Craig Jones, Tyler Weir, Joel Edwards, Edrissa Sonko, Sam Gwynne, Matt Done, Jonny Godsmark, Leon Constantine and Gavin McCallum. Subs: Joe Loftus and Kyle Patterson

Swansea won the game 3-1. Constantine scored the only goal for the Bulls.

In the FA Cup last night Accrington beat Barnet 1-0, Aldershot lost to Tranmere 2-1, and Rotherham were beaten 3-0 by Luton. Barrow beat Oxford 3-1 to book their Third Round place, while Kettering held Leeds for all but 13 minutes of extra time when they collapsed to a 5-1 defeat that then saw the club's board sack assistant manager John Deehan. Player boss Lee Harper is now considering his position.

Cash strapped Histon have suspended manager Steve Fallon after he allegedly told the squad they were all being released. Chairman Tony Roach says he told Fallon that four players needed to go to balance the books, and Fallon will now face a disciplinary hearing in ten days time. The FA Cup TV coverage left spare by Setanta's demise has been picked up by ESPN for around half the original fee. They will cover it for two years from next season.

Bournemouth are still trying to get their transfer embargo lifted. The Football League have acknowledged that they have cleared outstanding tax and footballing debts, but they are tied under an agreement made by the previous board to clear historical debts as well. Torquay's twice postponed FA Cup match at Stockport may be switched to Plainmoor. Stockport's rugby-shared pitch is in such a poor state that they have to find an alternative venue to play the game next Tuesday, and it will be Plainmoor if a local alternative cannot be found.

Weymouth's new owner George Rolls has been ploughing through two months of unopened mail at the club - to find it another £35,000 in debt. The £700,000 total debt is 'rising daily' with former boss Alan Lewer also chasing an £80,000 payout for unfair dismissal. Rolls say the club is owed £70,000 because the old board did not issue invoices for various things including loaning players out. Notts County are now claimed to be chasing Birmingham midfielder Lee Carsley, but they will make Daniel Jones' loan move from Wolves permanent in January.

Hartlepool have recorded an operating loss of £1.1million for last season, after recording a £1.8million loss the season before. They admit breaking the League's salary cap regulations by 29% last season. The parent company has now put in over £10million to cover losses since taking over the club in 1997. Ex-Bull Marcus Palmer scored again for Evesham as they beat Truro City 2-1 last night. Truro, with Tom Smith in their ranks, sacked their manager last week after an indifferent start to their first ever Zamaretto League campaign.

Macclesfield to swap Debt for Shares

By Organic Bull

As reported in our news round up Macclesfield Town have announced a plan which will strengthen their balance sheet by converting debt into share.

At the end of their last financial year the club were in debt to the tune of about £1.74M. 75% of this debt was loans from the club majority shareholders Amar and Bashir Alkadhi. Much of the remaining debt was loans by other directors.

Today the club have agreed to a 'major shift of debt to equity' by converting around half the debt into shares. They change, they say, will strengthen the balance sheet.

Macclesfield are hoping to move to a new ground and say that they are talking to potential new investors.

"These are exciting times for Macclesfield Town" said Vice Chairman Andy Scott.

"We believe we have a real opportunity to create a sustainable future but we need all the help we can get from the town and in particular from our loyal supporters if we are to succeed. We'd like them to join us as partners as we set out to build something we can be truly proud of."

Rochdale striker Chris Dagnall is the latest target for Peterboro, according to the press. The 12 goal striker is out of contract in the summer so the Spotland outfit may opt to cash in during the January window. Such is the disinterest in Darlington's season that their supporters club will not run a coach to an away game for the first time in 21 years for their trip to Torquay after just eight people signed up for the trip.

Burton reserve keeper Shane Redmond will miss two months after breaking his hand in their match with Rotherham at the weekend. Current no.1 Artur Krysiak currently has a hip problem, leaving the Brewers short. Bournemouth also face a keeper problem with Shwan Jalal picking up a calf muscle injury at the weekend to add to an existing ankle problem. Their only other keeper is 18 year old Dan Thomas, who made his League debut in replacing Jalal at the weekend, while their transfer embargo is likely to block a loan keeper.

A late bid to save King's Lynn has failed, with the club likely to pass into history tomorrow. Shareholder Michael Chinn has walked away from a proposed investment after delays at board level. The club have just three players left after most of the squad walked out last week. Northwich owner Jim Rushe has admitted he had to transfer list the squad due to low gates. Just a week after getting 3,500 for their FA Cup match, their league game drew just 451.

Rotherham have extended the contract of former Yeovil midfielder Gary Roberts until the end of the season. Ex-Bull Steve Guinan is to undergo a double hernia operation that will see him miss at least a month of the season. In an interview with the PFA, Guinan says the Cobblers are now looking to a mid-table place rather than instant promotion this season.

Chester's FA Trophy home game with Fleetwood has been brought forward to Friday night after Police, who struggled to cope with a four man on-pitch demonstration, deemed a Saturday afternoon too dangerous. Macclesfield are to convert £800,000 of their debt into shares in the club. Most of their £1.74million debt is owed to board members, mainly majority shareholders Amar and Bashar Alkadhi.

The seats are priced higher than the terrace and fans will be pleased to hear that Bulls News has today received confirmation that the lower priced terrace will be open on Saturday. Terrace prices are expected to be £14 for adults, £10 for concessions and 12-15 year-olds £5 (with a paying adult). Children U12 are admitted free so long as a full paying adult accompanies them. The equivalent pricing for seats is £18, £14 and £5 with children U12 again free with an adult.

The usual full travel guide will be published shortly.

Only the Bulls start at 7pm

By Organic Bull

Only the Hereford United/MK Dons Paint Trophy Tie will start at 7pm next week. The other three ties will commence later.

The idea to start at 7pm is to draw in more families and children to the game. However the early start does make it harder for some other supporters to get to Edgar Street particularily for those who have to travel some distance.

The full list of ties (all on Tuesday December 15th) is as follows:

Northern Section:

Carlisle v Bradford (7.30pm)
Leeds v Accrington (7.45pm)

Southern Section:

Hereford v MK Dons (7.00pm)
Southhampton v Norwich (7.45pm)

The referee for the Hereford tie will be Phil Crossley.

Bratt to Referee on Saturday

By Organic Bull

Steve Bratt from the West Midlands is set to referee Saturday's League Two match at Moss Road where Hereford United will be the visitors.

The Bulls have already met Bratt once this season as he refereed the drawn home match against Cheltenham Town last August.

To date this season Bratt has been the man in the middle for 14 games. He has given out 44 yellow and 3 red cards.

Ex-Bull Gary Hooper scored the only goal of the game as Scunthorpe beat Coventry yesterday. The win puts the Iron four points clear of the drop zone. Port Vale have denied rumours that the deal to bring £500,000 of investment from property company Harlequin has fallen apart. The deal has taken seven months to come to fruition so far, but both chairman Bill Bratt and Harlequin say the deal is still on the table.

Crewe told Peterboro they would have to pay £1million for striker Calvin Zola. The Posh are not interested at that price. Despite earning substatial sums from two televised games Northwich have put all their players on the transfer list due to a 'wage restructure' at the club. Fees will be sought for some of them, with the TV cash going towards the settlement with the taxman to allow the club to exit Administration.

Barrow have reported a £230,000 profit for last season, mainly due to their cup run. They have used the sum to clear some historical debt. Lincoln boss Chris Sutton has received a £500 fine and a warning after his touchline dismissal at Cheltenham last month. Assistant boss Ian Pearce was given a three match ban for his sending off as an unused sub.

Aldershot are said to have turned down loan bids from Peterboro and QPR for striker Marvin Morgan. Darlington have released goalkeeper David Knight, defender Matt Plummer, and midfielder James Bennett. None have featured in the matchday squad for several weeks. The Quakers named defender Steve Foster on the bench on Saturday as the contract clause stopping him from playing only refers to games started.

Ex-Bull Febian Brandy has returned to Man Utd for treatment on a thigh injury. Manager Mark Stimson has blamed their game last Tuesday for the injury, with Brandy not getting a proper warm up after being delayed in traffic. Northampton have recalled striker Joe Benjamin from his loan at Eastbourne to bolster their squad ahead of the Christmas period.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 6th

Preview: Macclesfield vs Bulls

By Bobo

The Bulls travel to Macclesfield on Saturday for the first of two must win League Two games if they want to do something with the season.

With the two opponents both in the bottom six, they are teams that need to be beaten if the Bulls want to be in with a shout at the end of the season - however trips to Moss Rose have not been entirely happy. In their three visits so far the Bulls have won once, on their last trip on Boxing Day 2007. Theo Robinson scored the goal in a 1-0 win that was marred by the injury that ended Luke Webb's Bulls career. That Robinson goal is the only Bulls goal scored at Moss Rose, with the other two games there being 2-0 and 3-0 wins for the home side. In all five games between the sides one side has gone home without a goal or a point with all the matches ending with a clean sheet for the victors.

Pre-season relegation tips Macclesfield are having what is becoming a usual struggle around the wrong end of the division. They have not won at home since September, and are seven games without a win home or away since beating Cheltenham in mid-October. They are also the side most likely to lose a lead in League Two, having failed to hold onto a lead six times this season. On the goal front defender Hamza Bencherif is the top scorer with five but the Algerian, with outside hopes of a World Cup berth, fractured an ankle on Saturday and will miss at least two months. Up front strike pair Ricky Sappleton and Matt Tipton have four each, but both have struggled for fitness in recent weeks. Sappleton lasted just 15 minutes of Saturday's game, while Tipton came on as a late sub with the Silkmen continuing a goal drought that has seen them score just once in five games.

The Bulls are five points clear of Macclesfield, occupying their historical home of 17th place in League Two. Having bagged three points at Northampton the Bulls should be adventurous enough to seek another win on Saturday. Their failure to score against Notts County was running against current form, with seven goals scored in their previous three League games, with the Bulls' form at present good enough for seventh place in the form table. More experience may be needed in the midfield after Saturday's loss. Three of the four starting midfielders had less than 20 League starts between them, while five of the side had not played in the Football League before this season.

Macclesfield Town vs Hereford United, Moss Rose, Saturday 12th December, 3.00pm.

Shot Shy Bulls Brushed Aside

By Organic Bull

Ledburybull reports from Edgar Street:

Hopes of a further climb up the table were dashed as this afternoon’s visitors Notts County eased to a comfortable victory. With Sven signing pre-match autographs, Craig King replacing Godsmark in an otherwise unchanged line up, and the Mitchell Brothers (or possibly the follically challenged pairing of Lee Hughes and Luke Rodgers) starring for the Magpies, the scene was set for an entertaining afternoon.

A cagey, evenly fought opening period saw a Jordon Mutch free kick clear the bar and a marauding run from Mathieu Manset which came to nought. Hughes and Rodgers, ably assisted by Ricky Ravenhill and Craig Westcarr, were looking lively and created a few openings, notably when Rodgers fired narrowly over. Ryan Green held the defence together with some timely interventions and his usual unhurried and effective distribution.

On 19 minutes, the Bulls were handed a golden opportunity to open their account. Marc Pugh beat the offside trap and raced onto a through ball. Faced with the considerable bulk of County stopper Kasper Schmeichel, Pugh attempted to lift the ball over him. The great Dane then fell, intentionally, on top of Pugh and held him to the deck to prevent any chance of reaching the loose ball. The penalty award was obvious, with the only debate being the colour of the card to be brandished. Ref. Mathieson, in an early bout of festive generosity, deemed a yellow sufficient punishment, a lenient interpretation not appreciated by the Meadow End faithful nor manager John Trewick. Schmeichel then secured his role as pantomime villain by making a smart save to Ryan Valentine’s spot kick.

This proved the turning point in the game, with a lacklustre Bulls finding it difficult to create clear cut chances and Notts closing down quickly and mopping up Hereford attacks. The experienced Hughes was making a nuisance of himself, and just after the half hour mark, created the opening goal. Westcarr got the first touch to a through ball, Adam Bartlett came to claim, but the lively Hughes nipped in to return the ball to Westcarr to score from an angle.

Few further incidents of note occurred before the interval. Darren Jones did well to join the attack, and had the ball in the net but the flag was up for offside.

HT: HUFC 0 NOTTS CO. 1

Richard Rose replaced Green for the second half, presumably due to injury rather than the need to change the colour scheme. Six minutes into the half, the visitors effectively secured their three point haul. A curling free kick by Ben Davies was glanced home by Mike Edwards.

Despite one or two promising moves, Hereford found it difficult to fashion a shot on goal. Pugh had one effort which took a meaty deflection before ballooning over the bar, and the same player was guilty of over- elaboration after one mazy run. Bartlett dealt smartly with a point blank Edwards header and a Davies free kick. Leon Constantine cleverly put Manset through, but he chose to pass instead of shooting. The Beast had a frustrating afternoon, and he reacted angrily to a tackle by Bishop. It was the Notts player who was lectured after hurling the ball at the Frenchman. Ex- Bull Karl Hawley replaced Rodgers and continued to link cleverly with Hughes.

Constantine controlled cleverly but then fired horribly wide, and then crossed for Manset but played it behind his strike partner as the game drifted to a conclusion. With such meagre fare on offer, disappointed Bulls fans trooped out into the steady drizzle to add to the Christmas shoppers’ traffic chaos.

Attendance: 2727 including Sven and 454 from Hooterville.

HUFC: Bartlett, Green (Rose 46), Lowe (Done 68), Jones, Blanchett, Valentine, Mutch, King (Constantine 68), Wedderburn, Pugh, Manset.

County looked very solid - Backe

By Organic Bull

Notts County manager Hans Backe gave his reaction to yesterday's game at Edgar Street.

"Hereford were in good form, but we looked very solid at the back. Neal Bishop and Ricky Ravenhill did a fantastic job in midfied," said Backe.

"We started very well in the first 20 to 25 minutes and then Hereford came back a bit in the second half, but I think we controlled the game and we really deserved the win.

"It was only for three or four minutes after we went two up that the game went a little bit open. When you are two up you should control the game. It was a difficult away game, they have only lost one game at home back in August, but we looked very solid."

Ex-Bull Watch

By Bobo

Tamika Mkandawire was sent off as Leyton Orient lost at Swindon. Josh Gowling was booked as Gillingham drew with his former club Carlisle. Richard Jackson debuted for Burton as they drew with Rotherham. Bradley Hudson-Odoi was one of five booked for Grays as they played out a goalless draw with Mansfield, with loan Bull Lee Morris coming on as a late sub. Jon Wallis scored from the spot as Dover drew at Bromley.

Graham Evans scored a late equaliser for Aberystwyth as they drew with Rhyl. Andy Moran scored a penalty as Prestatyn beat Elements Cefn Druids. Craig Samson kept a clean sheet as Ayr beat Dunfermline for only their second win of the season. Jennison Myrie-Williams scored what turned out to be the winner as Dundee Utd beat St Mirren.

Schmeichel should have seen Red - Trewick

By Organic Bull

Hereford United manager John Trewick admitted he wasn't sure of the rules regarding this afternoon's penalty when the Magpie's keeper was yellow carded. He thought it was a red card and mentioned a few other incidents during the game.

"Apparantly I'm told the ball was going away from the goal," Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Well does that matter? I don't know, I'm not quite sure I understand the rules quite honestly.

"To me it is a red card. The referee was very quick to get his yellow card out, very very quick almost as though he wanted the decision to be over before he has had time to think about it. We have to take that.

"There were other things happening on the field as well.

"I saw one of their players throw the ball at one of our players and he wasn't given a yellow card. I've seen a lot of other things going on on the pitch which I think should have been dealt with. But what can we do?

As regards the match Trewick said he was a little bit disappointed with the performance of the Bulls.

"We never quite got going after Tuesday. And in the end it all just fizzled out into a defeat.

"Having said that when you analyse the game I can't remember them having too many clear-cut chances.

"We had a penalty which we should have scored from, Leon had a good chance with a volley and Marc Pugh went through and looked like he was fouled by the man who was chasing him.

"They were as good a chances as there were all afternoon. So even though we haven't been at our best, I still disappointed not to have picked something up from the game and disappointed to have conceeded the goals in the way we did.

"They were better than us on the day."

If only I had scored the Penalty - Valentine

By Organic Bull

Ryan Valentine admitted to BBC Hereford and Worcester that the game might have finished differently if he had scored the penalty when Marc Pugh was brought down by Magpie's keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

"If I'd have scored that penalty early on may be we could have gone on to win the game," said the Hereford United defender.

"But when I missed it wasn't too long after that they nicked their first goal.

"They defended after that and limited our chances so well done to them.

"Marc Pugh has done well to get there before Schmeichel brought him done. The referee said the ball wasn't going towards goal, it was always going out of play.

"But in my view if the keeper comes out and he's last man and takes the forward down it's a straight red.

"We went in at half-time and thought there wasn't much in it the first half but them scoring within five minutes of the restart frightened us a little bit.

"They are a good side and they knew how to defend."

Results Round Up

By Bobo

Rochdale retain the top spot after a comfortable 3-0 demolition of Macclesfield, with Bournemouth keeping up the pressure in beating Shrewsbury (9th) 1-0. Rotherham are six points adrift in third after a 2-2 draw with Burton, with Notts County and Dagenham two points behind them with the Daggers drawing 1-1 at Grimsby. Aldershot take sixth place from Chesterfield with a 1-0 win over the Spireites, with Bury only kept out of seventh by goal difference after a 2-0 win over fast fading Barnet. At the other end of the form table Morecambe won again, 2-0 over Port Vale, to move within two points of the play-offs.

Down the bottom Darlington lost 1-0 at home to Bradford with their safety gap up to 11 points after Lincoln claimed a goalless draw with Crewe, while the Mariners are four points short. Torquay squandered an early lead to lose 4-2 at Accrington, while Cheltenham moved up a place but also wasted points with a 2-2 draw with Northampton.

In the Conference Chester fought tooth and nail, having a man sent off, to claim a goalless draw with Luton in front of 1,358 - 809 of them home fans. Oxford retained their five point lead at the top with a 4-2 win over Ebbsfleet, while Stevenage beat Kidderminster 2-0 to keep second place. Forest Green beat Rushden 1-0, but are still five points the wrong side of the relegation line.

Bulls Beaten By Magpies

By Bobo

The Bulls lost today's League Two match at Edgar Street 2-0 to Notts County.

A foul by Kasper Schmeichel turned the game, ultimately against the Bulls. He was only booked when bringing down Marc Pugh when he appeared to be the last man, and promptly saved Ryan Valentine's penalty well to turn the game, and the momentum, to the Magpies. Goals from Craig Westcarr and Mike Edwards cemented the points with the Bulls managing only one shot on target in the entire match.

The game was watched by another low crowd of 2,727, with 454 from Notts County, and the fare served up would have done little to persuade many to come again.

Full report later.

Defenders will be perfect against Hereford says Backe

By Organic Bull

Notts County may only have two fit centre-backs fit for this afternoon's League Two match at Edgar Street but manager Hans Backe feels they will be able to cope with the Hereford attack.

"Graeme Lee and Mike Edwards have a chance to do a perfect job, they have been solid when they have played together," said Backe.

"They are rather the same characters as centre-backs, they are strong players and good tacklers.

"They will be perfect against a team like Hereford.

"They have a strong physical style and the pitch will probably not be the best, but we have to cope."

Backe's comments about the pitch may be mis-guided. There has been very little rain at Edgar Street in the last 24 hours and conditions are expected to be dry for most of today.

Bulls at Home Today

By Organic Bull

Both the Hereford United senior team and the under 18's are at home today. John Trewick's team play Notts County at 3pm and Colin Williams' side take on Oxford United at 11am.

Trewick should have a virtually fully fit squad to choose from. Only Craig Jones is known to be injured. It has been suggested that the manager may decide to start with the same eleven that gave the Bulls their first away victory of the season at Northampton last Tuesday but that would mean that Craig King would be on the bench for the second game running which given his performance after coming on at Sixfields might be hard on the young loanee from Leicester City.

Support for the Bulls at Edgar Street has been somewhat disappointing recently. However given recent results at home and Tuesday's away win, there is every reason to hope that the gate may be slightly higher today.

Certainly there will be more media interest in the game this afternoon with Sven-Goran Eriksson once again the the news for off pitch reasons.

As ever there will be updates from the game on BBC Hereford and Worcester. However the internet will be covering the Worcester Warriors match.

Meanwhile supporters are reminded that tickets for the away match at Cheltenham on January 9th go on sale from 11am this morning.

And the Junior Bulls and their merry band of helpers will be selling their Grand Christmas Draw tickets around the ground. There are some very good prizes on offer including:

1st Prize: Hereford United matchday experience
2nd Prize: £100.00 Argos voucher
3rd Prize: £100.00 H.U.F.C. Club shop voucher
4th Prize: 4 Poster bed and breakfast at the Green Dragon

Finally the sponsors of the match ball this afternoon are donating it to St Michael's Hospice. It will be auctioned/raffled in the near future. The sponsors have also given a couple of seats to 'the good folk at St. Michael's in recognition of their outstanding work.'

Jackson moves to Burton

By Organic Bull

Richard Jackson has joined Burton Albion on a one month contract. The former Hereford United defender has recently been playing for Whitby Town.

"After the unfortunate injury to Ryan Austin and with Andrew Corbett's absence I felt it was necessary to strengthen the right-back position," manager Paul Peschisolido told the club's official website.

"Richard Jackson is a player I admire, he's professional and a great lad.

"He's a natural full-back and I was reluctant not to sign him the first time after he had been on trial with us."

Schmeichel Expects Tough Game

By Bobo

Notts County goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel expects tough games throughout the season.

Speaking to their official site he said his aim was to keep a clean sheet: "Away from home, at home, it's equally important to get clean sheets - that's what I pride myself on most. We know we can score goals and with the lads up front we know they're quite prolific, so as long as we keep it tight at the back and continue to score goals we know we've got a good platform.

"I think we are, we're by no means the finished article but we're doing well and we're keeping it tight at the back. Every game in this league's tough; there's no easy games at all. Even when we won 4-0 the other night, it was still tough in the second half when they came at us and put us under pressure."

It is not the first visit to Edgar Street for Schmeichel. Back in September 2006 he was on the losing side playing against the Bulls for Bury. On that day both he and Bulls custodian Wayne Brown had little to do as a late Andy Williams strike seperated the two sides.

Sven To Be At Edgar Street

By Bobo

Sven Goran Ericsson will be at Edgar Street despite the dispute over payments currently casting a shadow over his Notts County tenure.

The former England manager has demanded payment of fees into the millions from Swiss Commodity Holdings. He has a contract with the club itself that Executive Chairman Peter Trembling says is paid up to date but the additional deal with SCH, in which Ericsson acts as an ambassador for the company, is the one in question.

Trembling told the press: "There are frustrations with the parent company, that cannot be denied, and they do need ironing out, and they are being ironed out.

"Sven is most certainly being paid by Notts County, but other issues involving shares and payments linked to the parent company are issues for Sven rather than the football club. Sven is not about to walk out, but I cannot comment about issues outside of the football club."

The situation echoes the claims surrounding Sol Campbell's sudden departure from the club. In interviews he suggested non-payment was the reason behind his departure, and he and the club settled their differences this week to see his registration released by the club - but the actual terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

Cheltenham Away All Ticket

By Bobo

The Bulls' trip to Whaddon Road on January 9th has been made all ticket.

Tickets will be available from Edgar Street from 11am this Saturday. Adult tickets for the game are £20, with £14 (concessions) and £7 (under 16) tickets also available.

Tickets are for the 1,100 capacity Carlsberg stand at Whaddon Road, which is usually a home section . Away fans are usually in part of the 2,000 capacity In2Print stand for this season.

Bulls Apply For Blackfriars Funding

By Bobo

Graham Turner has told the official site that they have applied for the grants to build the new Blackfriars End stand.

But things are moving slowly, with a series of committees for the application to pass through, with Turner saying: "I gave the target of the start of next season but, with a bit of luck, the end of this season. That's looking very optimistic for the end of this season.

"Once planning consent has been granted I think things can move very rapidly."

News Round Up

By Bobo

Crewe striker Calvin Zola is a January target for Peterboro according to the Mirror. The paper says Zola, who cost the Railwaymen £200,000 from Tranmere, will move for around £250,000 when Aaron McLean is sold by the Posh. Darlington say they are forced into not playing Steve Foster as he is "by far the highest earner at the club" and they could not sustain his wages at Conference level.

Grimsby have extended the loan deal for teenage defender Damien McCrory from Plymouth for a second month. Ebbsfleet have bought out the MyFC website from founder Will Brooks for £15, and will increase annual membership from £35 to £100 in a bid to safeguard the club's future. Brooks was taking 20% of fees in exchange for operating the site, but the club will now run the site itself. They hope to nearly double income with the price increase.

Telford are to loan former Hereford United striker Danny Carey-Bertram to Worcester City for a month. Rochdale's home game with Bury has been switched for live Sky coverage from the Saturday to Monday February 1st. Lincoln have reported a £66,000 loss on last season. Their turnover increased to £2.7million.

Trewick not concerned about Sven

By Organic Bull

Hereford United manager John Trewick appears unconcerned about the fact that former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, now with Notts County, is set to visit Edgar Street tomorrow.

"I treat every visiting team and manager with the same sort of respect," Trewick told the Worcester News.

"The fact that it’s Notts County, Sven-Goran Eriksson and all that entails really is immaterial as far as I am concerned.

"There are three points to be won and all we can do is prepare the best we can and not get carried away with all of the possible razzamatazz and publicity that may surround Notts County.

"We are as confident as we can be without being overly so.

"We feel we have played quite consistently over the last 14 or 15 games and I think it’s a good opportunity to continue in that vein.

"I have said before that my aim is to be in the top half of the league before the end of the year and that still holds true.

"We have a realistic chance of achieving that goal.

"It’s going quite well at home so far but we must not get complacent and need to keep working hard to make sure we continue that.”

Bulls 2-1 to defeat County

By Organic Bull

The bookies got it wrong last Tuesday when the Bulls defeated Northampton 3-1 - they had offered 3/1 for a win by the Bulls - and so it might be argued that 2/1 isn't a bad price for a home win for Hereford United tomorrow.

The latest offer from SkyBet:

Hereford 2/1 Draw 5/2 Notts County 5/4

Meanwhile the odds offered by SkyBet for the Bulls to win the League Two title have dropped from 125/1 to 100/1.

And the price for the Bulls to be promoted is now 16/1. That's down from 20/1 just a few days ago.

Will Sven be at Edgar Street ?

By Organic Bull

More speculation about Sven-Goran Eriksson and his future at Notts County has appeared in this morning's Daily Telegraph.

The paper suggest that whilst Eriksson is still at Meadow Lane, he hasn't been paid 'the multi-million pound sum he claims was promised to him by a company associated with Qadbak, County’s owners, when he joined.'

'The Swede is understood to be claiming entitlement to a seven-figure sum from Swiss Commodity Holding, a company closely entwined with County, for his role as an “ambassador”.'

61 year old Eriksson is said to have insisted on talks next week to clarify whether he is going to be paid and also, perhaps more importantly for the club, to ascertain the basis of more questions being asked by the Football League into the structure of the ownership of Notts County.

Tomorrow Notts County travel to Edgar Street for a League Two match. Whether Sven-Goran Eriksson will be there remains to be seen.

Meanwhile there do not appear to be any plans to revive the anicient ritual of kicking the swede towards the Meadow End before the kick-off.

Men who watch football can suffer domestic abuse

By Organic Bull

One out of every six men who watch Hereford United, if statistics are to be believed, are likely to suffer from domestic abuse and/or domestic violence at sometime in their lives.

However help is at hand according to the charity The ManKind Initative.

Men watching Hereford United play football every week can be typically embarrassed and ashamed of what is happening to them and may not know how or where to get help. But there is help - the ManKind Initiative is a charity that provides a help-line for male victims and to coincide with National Domestic Abuse Awareness Week (28
th November - 5th December) they are raising awareness of their helpline so that any man suffering knows who to contact.

Vaughan Pays Up To Save Chester

By Bobo

Stephen Vaughan snr has loaned his 'owner' son Stephen Vaughan jnr £36,600 to keep Chester in the Conference.

The sum is the anticipated difference between sums due to the club from the Football League and the Premier League handout withheld earlier in the season, and their total presumed debt to footballing creditors. That would suggest that up to £350,000 is owed to footballing creditors, with a large chunk of it to the PFA.

Over on the Devachat forum the news has not gone down well, with many fans still intent on staying away until the Vaughans are long gone. There are also further claims that some of the youth team have not been paid for up to four months.

Managing Director Bob Gray told the BBC that Vaughan senior has spoken to people about selling the club: "He has seen people. In fact he saw somebody today. But he will not let the club go at any price. They're coming up with stupid figures. They don't realise the strength of the man. He's as thick-skinned as a rhino."

That should interest the authorities, as Vaughan snr told people last week he was no longer owner of the club...

News Round Up

By Bobo

Aldershot's supporters will have to make alternative arrangements after their coach company ditched the club over damage to the coaches. A recent trip to Tranmere saw the coaches targeted and £10,000 of damage done, while an earlier incident saw another £5,000 of damage done. Northampton loanee Josh Walker, injured against the Bulls on Tuesday night, has returned to Middlesboro due to a dislocated shoulder that will require surgery. He will miss the rest of the season.

Former Bull Mark Beesley has been recalled by Cambridge from Chester early due to an injury crisis at the Abbey.

Backe wants Early Goal at Edgar Street

By Organic Bull

Notts County manager Hans Backe said that he wants his team to score an early goal on Saturday against Hereford just as they did against Darlington on Tuesday evening.

"Against Darlington the start was excellent, especially since we had been a bit of slow starters in most of the games so far," he told the Notts County OS.

"Getting the early goals helped us a lot and hopefully we can do the same against Hereford.

"The away games will be difficult and Hereford have started to pick up in the last four or five games.

"They have been picking up some good results last few games.

"They have changed their system and it will be difficult to analyse them."

Trophy Semi-Final Details

Johnstone's Paints are making a determined effort to attract as many supporters to the Southern Section Semi-final of the Trophy at Edgar Street on December 15th when Hereford United will play MK Dons.

Posters such as the one shown above can be downloaded from the Football League website.

And as detailed on the posters supporters are reminded that youngsters can watch the match of just £3 if they are aged 13 to 16 or just £1 if they are under 13.

However these tickets have to be purchased in advance and at the same time as a full price adult ticket.

Kettering Release Ashikodi

By Bobo

Kettering have released former Bulls striker Moses Ashikodi after his monthly contract was not renewed.

He reacted badly to being substituted twice in recent games, the second time televised live during their FA Cup draw with Leeds, and had also reportedly had a scuffle with a teammate during a previous game. Despite scoring seven times in 16 appearances he has been shown the door.

His attitude problems have seen his career spiral downwards since playing top flight football in both England and Scotland and representing England at three age levels. He was released from first club Millwall for threatening a team mate with a knife, and even during his stint with the Bulls Steve Guinan admitted 'we couldn't work out what he was about'.

Mathieson to Officiate on Saturday

By Organic Bull

Scott Mathieson is set to take charge of Saturday's League Two match at Edgar Street where Notts County will be the visitors.

The Bulls haven't seen Mathieson this season so far, but met up with him twice last season. Firstly he was in charge at Edgar Street for the visit of Walsall which ended in a 0-0 stalemate and secondly at a Tuesday evening game at Carlisle which the Bulls won 2-1 with goals from Steve Guinan and Ben Smith. No Hereford United player was booked in either game.

To date this season Mathieson has officiated in 12 games and has given out 18 yellow cards and just one red card.

Preview: Bulls vs Notts County

By Bobo

The Bulls entertain Notts County on Saturday in League Two action at Edgar Street.

The Bulls had a torrid time in their first season facing the Magpies, losing both games. The two sides then spent 19 seasons apart before meeting in the 06/07 season with the Bulls winning both games. The season after the Bulls won 3-2 at Meadow Lane before claiming a goalless draw at Edgar Street on New Years Day 2008, so the Bulls will be defending a four match unbeaten streak.

Unlike their guests on Saturday, the Bulls haven't been making the headlines this season. A disasterous start has been replaced with steady progress. The addition of youngsters Nathaniel Wedderburn and Jordon 'must have a foot like a traction engine' Mutch saw the Bulls put out a side on Tuesday night with an average age that would struggle to get into some nightclubs. Another win on Saturday can put the Bulls within touching distance of the play-offs - and within three points of the big spending Magpies.

Notts County have endured more off-field publicity than any League Two side. Claims of broken contracts, sudden departures, and unpaid fees by a complex ownership have tainted what is otherwise a strong start for a side that would have otherwise been spending another term bounding around the bottom six like a wounded animal. However the top six wasn't good enough to keep Ian McParland in a job and his replacement, Hans Backe, has won only one of his five League matches - earning three less points that his predecessor did in his final five games.

Hereford United vs Notts County, Edgar Street, Saturday 5th December, 3.00pm.

Crewe Win Drops Bulls A Place

By Bobo

Crewe beat Chesterfield 3-2 to drop the Bulls down to 15th place in League Two.

Crewe's on-loan keeper Steve Phillips saved two penalties in the first 20 minutes, with the Railwaymen surviving a late Spireites comeback. Crewe move up to 14th, level on points with the Bulls, Port Vale, and Burton.

News Round Up

By Bobo

Luton midfielder Andy Burgess has been charged with betting on games involving his own team. While a Rushden player he is alleged to have bet on two of their matches during last season. He has until Friday to respond to two charges under FA Rule 8e. Burgess is currently on loan at Mansfield. Rotherham rejected a bid from Peterboro for striker Adam Le Fondre before last week's loan deadline.

Halifax's ongoing redevelopment of the Shay has been cursed once again after 3,500 seats due to be installed at the stadium were deemed unsafe. They were bought nine years ago before work stopped, but are now deemed to be too brittle for modern safety standards. It will cost £40,000 to replace them. Peterboro's local council want to buy London Road from it's current owners, a property developer, to turn the stadium into a community facility.

Former Bull Marcus Palmer scored two goals last night in consecutive minutes for Evesham United against Cambridge City.

Bulls receive Paint Accolade

By Organic Bull

The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has chosen John Trewick’s men as the winners of its area quarter final Team of the Round accolade, thanks to a fine performance at Brisbane Road when they defeated League One Leyton Orient.

The Bulls saw off their London opponents in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, after drawing 1-1 in normal time when they conceded in the last minute.

And despite the late disappointment of conceding an equaliser, they dusted themselves down to progress and cause one of the biggest upsets in the competition so far.

A Johnstone’s Paint Trophy panel voted the performance as the most impressive and an official award will be presented to the club next week at their Edgar Street stadium.

It is hoped that the honour will inspire the League Two side when they take on MK Dons in the area semi finals.

Boss John Trewick said: “We were delighted to progress to the next stage, and showed immense character in doing so.

“The award is testament to the work that the lads put into that game against Leyton Orient and we are looking to go further when we entertain MK Dons.”

Johnstone’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “Hereford United’s penalty shoot-out win was the stand out result of the area quarter-finals and one that deserved our team of the round award.

“The team is certainly showing nerves of steel, after beating Aldershot Town in round two on spot kicks as well. The club has embraced the trophy since the very first kick and we look forward to seeing them take on MK Dons.”

Hereford United will welcome MK Dons to Edgar Street on Tuesday December 15th at 7pm.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells….

Oh what fun it is to watch
United WIN AWAY!

So sang the travelling Bulls as Hereford deservedly secured their first away win of the season at Sixfields on Tuesday evening.

John Trewick sprang a few surprises with his team selection, giving starts to Le Beast, Johnny Godsmark, Marc Pugh and debutant Nathaniel Wedderburn. A catastrophic start saw The Cobblers take the lead in the opening seconds but United fought back with goals through Daren Jones, Manset and Craig King to notch three points and move them comfortably towards mid-table.

Within thirty seconds of the start, Akinfenwa broke from midfield and into the box before sending a low centre across the penalty spot. Steve Guinan stepped over the ball and Ryan Gilligan, arriving unmarked, was able to slot home from 10 yards. It was far from being the required start, particularly as the goal had worrying similarities to the one conceded late in the Colchester game. The Bulls, however, were soon back on the offensive with Pugh and Valentine combining well down the left before Northampton cleared the cross. Manset burst between two defenders but his 25-yarder was well over. Then McKay broke from midfield but was halted by a timely clearance from Ryan Green. With the game just ten minutes old, the hosts lost the services of Josh Walker who left the field on a stretcher following what looked an innocuous challenge. He was replaced by Alex Dyer. Another Valentine/Pugh combination forced a corner on the left from which The Bulls drew level. Jordan Mutch swung over the flag kick to the far post, which was met on the volley by Manset. Although the striker’s effort was blocked, it fell to Darren “no-nonsense” Jones who fired into the bottom corner from 10 yards. One apiece and not looking bad at all.

Shortly afterwards, a Pugh/Godsmark move resulted a cross that just escaped Manset as The Bulls at times showed an Arsenalesque tendency to over elaborate in the danger area…just kick the thing into the net. The Cobblers were showing signs of cracking but the telling ball was sometimes to late being delivered. United had a lucky let-off when Manset sliced a clearance narrowly wide of his own goal before making amends when he released Pugh who delivered a fine cross to Godsmark who stabbed wide from close range. A long Northampton throw was flicked on by Guinan but Gilligan’s effort sailed over the bar. Manset had been on the receiving end of some holding and shirt-pulling from former MKDongs scaffolder Danny Swailes and it came as no surprise when the referee noted his details following a challenge on Mutch. As the game approached the break, Marc Pugh and Ryan Green (in an unexpectedly forward position) fashioned an opening for Wedderburn which the youngster fizzed just wide of the upright.

HT Cobblers 1 Bulls 1

Manset was quickly on the break forcing a corner following a brace of stepovers but the flag-kick came to nothing. Ryan Green again moved forward with the ball before finding Godsmark whose cross was headed clear before Darren Jones swept a ball forward to Marc Pugh but his cross failed to reach the advancing Valentine. The Bulls were certainly looking the more likely to score although Guinan’s trademark runs and lay-offs meant Uniteds defensive concentration had to be at it’s best. On 55 minutes, The Bulls took the lead. Akinfenwa conceded a free-kick some 35 yards from goal. Jordan Mutch stepped up to hit a thunderous drive which home keeper, Chris Dunn, could only parry upwards. Manset was the quickest to react as he headed over the line from a couple of feet. Hereford continued to play the better football and Manset was maybe unlucky with a couple of rushed efforts. It has to be said that his marker, Swailes, was busy demonstrating all the poise and ability of a three-legged chair as he regularly hauled the Bulls striker to the ground. Mutch prompted a move which found Manset, for once, free of Swailes clutches but the Frenchman hurried a shot which went well wide before a neat move provided the third and killer goal from the visitors. Manset picked up the ball in the final third and slipped it through to Marc Pugh. Pugh sidestepped his marker before delivering an inch perfect cross to Craig King (replacement for Godsmark) on the edge of the six-yard box. King showed calmness to commit the keeper before firing into the net and putting the victory beyond doubt. The hosts managed to get the ball into the net on a couple of occasions but both efforts were chalked off with comfortable offside decisions.

FT Cobblers 1 Bulls 3

Overall, it was a very deserved victory from a game in which Hereford had the lion’s share of possession, played the better football and had the greater number of on-target goal attempts. Apart from one slightly worrying moment of indecision, Bartlett preformed well including showing improvement in coming for crosses. Darren Jones was determined in the challenge and Ryan Green’s timing and positioning was a joy to watch while Blanchett did his share of graft at the back. Valentine and Lowe supported well and Wedderburn did a decent job in the holding role alongside Mutch who lasted the pace better than on Saturday. The game was watched by a reported 3524 with 166 visitors (there did seem a few more) including a recognisable generous sprinkling of exiles from the southeast.

Hereford:- Bartlett, Jones, Green, Valentine, Lowe, Wedderburn, Mutch, Valentine, Godsmark (King 65), Manset, Pugh. Subs not used:- Adamson, Rose, Gwynne, McCallum, Constantine, Done.
Northampton:- Dunn, Johnson, Hinton, Swailes, Gilbert, Walker (Dyer 10), Gilligan, McKay (Herbert 72), Holt; Guinan, Akinfenwa (Curtis 60). Subs not used:- Rodgers, Mulligan, Brown, Kanyuka.

Manager's Reactions

By Bobo

Cobblers' boss Ian Sampson told the press it was their worst performance of the season: "It was a very disappointing performance and that's the worst I've seen us play this season. We got off to a great start but we didn't kick on from the early goal and that was the real disappointing thing.

"We looked lethargic, we lacked sharpness and enthusiasm and if you can't pass the ball to each other then you are going to have problems. I don't think there was any question that the players were not trying but when passes go astray and the crowd are getting on your back then you can lose a bit of confidence. The fans have every right to voice their frustration but the players need to rise above that.

"We are not getting results at the moment so of course I am concerned but it's only us who can turn things around, no one else."

Bulls boss John Trewick was more upbeat: "We've been playing pretty well in the last few matches with the new system. I just tinkered with it tonight, played with a couple of wide men and one centre forward which isn't a great deal different to what we've been doing. With four players in there with fresh legs I wanted extra energy in there.

"The lads played the system well I felt, so much so that Northampton had to change to try to deal with us. Once they'd done that I had to tinker with it a bit again to negate what they'd done and we controlled the game apart from one period."

Speaking about Mathieu Manset he added: "That's what Mathieu can do. He's big, strong, and quick and he's got a good touch. He worked very well up front for us I thought - ran his socks off, as did everybody else. It was a real solid team performance and a very well deserved victory."

Febian Brandy was omitted from Gillingham's side after half their team got stuck in traffic and failed to make kick-off. They ended up playing in Leyton Orient's away kit, and lost 3-1. Karl Broadhurst was booked as Crawley lost at home to Oxford. Marlon Jackson scored Aldershot's fourth as they beat Dagenham.

On loan Bull Lee Morris scored deep in injury time as Mansfield won 3-1 at Gateshead. He played about 15 minutes of the game.

Rochdale head the division after winning 3-0 at Bradford, with Bournemouth slipping to second after only drawing 1-1 at Barnet. Rotherham stay third despite losing 2-0 at Shrewsbury, who remain just outside the play-offs, after Dagenham lost 5-2 at home to Aldershot. Chesterfield can claim third with a big win over Crewe tomorrow night, with Notts County returning to form with a 4-0 demolition of Darlington. The Bulls are up to 14th, and five points short of the play-offs, but will lose a place if Crewe beat the Spireites tomorrow. Morecambe beat Bury 3-0 to move up to tenth after five straight League wins.

At the bottom the Quakers are now 10 points short of safety after Torquay beat Cheltenham 3-0 to move clear of the drop zone. Lincoln are now the target for Grimsby to escape the drop, with the Imps losing 2-1 at home to Port Vale to be four points clear of the Mariners. Accrington beat Burton 2-0 to drop the Brewers back into mid-table.

In the Conference Oxford's lead is up to five after a 2-1 win at Crawley, with Stevenage losing 2-1 at Ebbsfleet. Kidderminster bored Tamworth in a goalless draw, while Chester lost 1-0 to a late Cambridge goal to keep them on a negative points balance.

Bulls Take Three On Their Travels

By Bobo

The Bulls finally secured three points on their travels for the first time since March with a 3-1 win at Northampton.

Darren Jones, Mathieu Manset (his first League goal), and Craig King handed the Bulls their first away League win in nearly nine months, with the Cobblers scoring inside the first 30 seconds through Ryan Gilligan to leave many Bulls fans mimicking the bowl of petunias from the Hitchhikers Guide until Jones pounced on a loose clearance.

It was not only their first three points on the road, but it was also the first game they had won from behind in 44 matches - and the first time they had scored three in a game for the same time. That game, last February, saw Cheltenham defeated 3-2 after the Bulls were 2-1 down.

Full report later.

Shooooooot!

By Bobo

The Bulls are one of the most accurate sides in front of goal - when they can manage to get a shot in.

Only four League Two sides are ahead of the Bulls in shooting accuracy in the League this term with Constantine, Manset, McCallum and co getting 52% of shots on target. Chesterfield and Bury head the table with 55% accuracy, while Macclesfield are trailing at the wrong end with just 40%.

The Bulls are, however, towards the bottom of the table when it comes to number of shots. They have 177 shots to their name so far, putting them in 19th place. Bottom place goes to Barnet with 157 attempts, while Notts County's expensive forward line has managed 275 shots.

The Bulls do head one table. They have hit the woodwork the least number of times with just one shot bouncing off the frame of the goal. Port Vale, with 16 fewer shots than the Bulls, have racked up 14 'unlucky' hits of the wood.

Grimsby have parted company with assistant boss Brian Stein 'by mutual consent'. The former Luton man followed ex-boss Mike Newell to Grimsby but new boss Neil Woods has decided he needs to appoint his own man. Mariners' chairman John Fenty has dismissed claims of a drinking culture at the club. Burton defender is to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament. The injury will mean he will likely not be ready for the start of next season.

Morecambe's new stadium is to cost a total of £12million it has been revealed today. The complex includes a 300 capacity conference suite, six executive boxes, a full size artificial training pitch, netball and tennis courts, gym, and a pub - although only three sides of the ground will be covered initially. Cheltenham are giving a trial to former Blackpool defender Claus Jorgensen. He had a short term deal at Port Vale earlier in the season.

Bulls like to play football notes Sampson

By Organic Bull

Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson has said that his side badly needs to take three points from this evening's fixture with Hereford United.

"We need to start picking up some points and moving up the league table," he said.

"We are looking forward to the game and being at home it's an ideal opportunity for us to try and get the three points.

"The league is still very tight but we need to get on a run and our immediate aim is still just to try and get into the top half of the table.

"Hereford are on a decent run at the minute and I think they were a bit unfortunate to go out of the cup against Colchester on Saturday.

"They've got some decent players and I'm sure Leon Constantine will be out to prove a point to his former club. We will need to nullify him like we would any opposition player.

"John Trewick was a good footballer so we know that Hereford like to get the ball down and play and I think most teams in this league now try and play a bit of football."

Kenny Lunt is rated unlikely to feature this evening. He is reported by the Worcester News to have a virus. Edrissa Sonko however is fit again after his illness and may take his place alongside Birmingham youngster Jordon Mutch.

Meanwhile Cheltenham Town must be looking out for some bargains. Their club captain, Shane Duff, who is currently injured, will be at the game on scouting duty.

Chester Decision Delayed

By Bobo

Chester's fate has been delayed until an emergency meeting of the Conference committee on Thursday.

Today's deadline, the third one to demand the repayment of outstanding sums to Wrexham and Vauxhall Motors, passed without payment of what is claimed to be just £12,500. The Conference have told Cambridge that their match with Chester tomorrow will go ahead.

Cobblers 10/11 to defeat Bulls

By Organic Bull

Northampton Town are firm favourites to defeat Hereford United tomorrow at Sixfields according to Skybet.

Northampton 10/11 Draw 12/5 Hereford 3/1

However the same organisation gives the Bulls hope for three points next Saturday when Sven comes to Edgar Street.

Hereford 2/1 Draw 5/2 Notts Co. 5/4

With the Bulls slowly but surely moving up the League Two table the odds for promotion have slightly dropped to 20/1. For a top of the league finish 125/1 is available.

As for top scorer in the league, no Hereford United player is on the Skybet list. This is assumed to mean that Leon Constantine and Marc Pugh, for example, are at least 150/1 to score more goals tham any other player in League Two.

Bulls Gates Under Expectations

By Bobo

Attendances at Edgar Street this season should be a cause of concern, with numbers dropping below pre-season estimates.

Graham Turner told the press before the start of the season that they were anticipating a 25% drop in income, however gates are currently down 27% - and falling. Last season's average of 3,270 has dropped to 2,402 with the last four home matches, including the derby match with Shrewsbury, have averaged just 2,272 - a 30% drop on the season before.

Gates at Edgar Street have seen the third worst drop of all League sides - with Darlington already recording a 32% drop and Stockport 30% - while nine League Two sides have recorded drops of 10% or more this term.

Finances would have been bouyed by this season's cup sucesses, but an increase in early season loan signings would have dug into that income. Saturday's £7,500 for extended TV highlights also brought about a string of new advertising hoardings at Edgar Street that would have nearly doubled the TV cash, while the prize money for winning the First Round game was also a bonus on last season's takings.

Saturday's match at Edgar Street, against Notts County, has been designated all-ticket for away supporters so should see a good number of Magpies fans through the doors, but the subsequent games against MK Dons and Lincoln are not expected to be huge draws.

The Johnstones Paint Trophy game has been classed as standard general pricing, with discounted kids tickets in advance, rather than the more usual discounts across the board that will likely harm the attendance while the Lincoln game, moved to the Friday night to avoid the Christmas shoppers, is not expected to be a strong draw. For many it will likely to be a case of one game or the other with finances tight and with both games being on cold winter nights a few may decide to skip both.

Falling attendances could have one serious consequence. The Football League will expect revised turnover figures in December and any club deemed to be breaching the wage capping rules on the updated figures will get a transfer embargo.

Cobblers Bemoan Low Gates

By Bobo

Northampton need to win Tuesday's game with the Bulls to get the club's supporters back through the gates.

Gates at Sixfields have dropped 18% on last season, and just 2,800 home fans of their 4,000 average watched Saturday's FA Cup loss with manager Ian Sampson telling the local press that only one thing will get the fans back through the doors: "Without stating the obvious, we just need the results. It doesn't matter how you play, winning football gets fans back into the stadium and that's what we're trying to do.

"We're in a bad spell of results where we haven't had a win, but the past couple of performances have pleased me. The first half at Aldershot was probably the best we've played for a while and I was delighted with our general play against Southampton.

"We've conceded too many goals this season and we know that. We've scored a few, we've been pretty good going forward but we need to tighten up at the back. We just need to be closer to the opposition, whether it's the player crossing the ball or the player in the box."

The Cobblers will be boosted for tomorrow's game by the debut of loan man Danny Swailes. The MK Dons defender missed their FA Cup game with stitches in a knee injury, while ex-Bull Dean Beckwith is back in training after missing two weeks with a hamstring problem and fellow defender John Johnson is also expected to return from injury.

News Round Up

By Bobo

Another day, another rumour of disquiet at Notts County. The Mail on Sunday reports that Sven Goran Ericsson is unhappy after not receiving payments from his contract with the Magpies' parent company. He is reported to have two contracts - one with the club and a second deal working as an Ambassador with the parent company - and the paper says he is owed millions in unpaid fees. County say the matter is nothing to do with them.

Shrewsbury have reported payments to agents of £18,966.66 for the year up to the end of September. Aldershot reported £6,000. Meanwhile the Shrews' major sponsor, kit manufacturer Prostar, is to take legal action against Accrington over unpaid debts. Stanley are wearing a Joma made home kit and the Prostar made away kit after the company pulled the plug on the deal due to the debts.

Dagenham have signed defender Gavyn Dayes on non-contract terms. He arrives from Ryman side Tonbridge Angels, so is allowed to move outside the transfer window as he has not been attached to a qualifying club. Altrincham have asked fans to find the £1,000 application fee to join the Football League should they be in a position to need it at the end of the season. They are currently six points short of the play-offs.

Chester's alleged former owner Stephen Vaughan has told the BBC he has 'retired' from football. The 48 year old will be nearly 60 by the time his ban from being a company director is lifted, but he tells the BBC he will continue to fund the club - words that will be of interest to the footballing authorities. The club have not paid any of the footballing debts that are due for payment today, and the Conference are expected to make a statement later.

Preview: Northampton vs Bulls

By Bobo

The Bulls travel to Sixfields on Tuesday night looking for their first win against Northampton in seven attempts.

Last season the Cobblers did a League double over the Bulls, winning 2-0 at Edgar Street last November before securing a 2-1 win in a desperate scramble to avoid relegation in April. Those wins add to two narrow LDV wins during the Bulls' Conference years and two victories in the Bulls' final League season mean they are unbeaten against the Bulls all the way back to March 1996, when Tony James (the First) scored the only goal of the game to seperate the two sides.

The Cobblers have had a management change and acquired two ex-Bulls since the two sides met at the end of last season. Stuart Gray's two and a half year reign ended in September after a slow start, but Ian Sampson has failed so far to ignite their season. He has won five of 16 games in charge to leave them 18th and two points behind the Bulls. Dean Beckwith and Steve Guinan were recruited by Gray in the summer to varying degrees of sucess. Beckwith has missed six League games with a variety of injuries, while Guinan has seven goals.

The Bulls are still seeking their first three points on the road this season. It was March when Guinan helped the Bulls to three points at Carlisle, with thirteen League matches passing since. In those games the Bulls have only been beaten by more than one goal twice and have often fallen to a late lapse of concentration just like the one that undid the Bulls on Saturday - the Bulls have now conceded 13 times in the last five minutes of either half. They have also never lost when scoring first - but have also not won when conceding first either.

Northampton Town vs Hereford United, Sixfields, Tuesday 1st December, 7.45pm.

Death of Former Bull

By Organic Bull

The death of Frank Fidler, a former Hereford United player, has been announced. He was 85.

Fidler was born in Middleton, Lancashire in 1924 and started his footballing career with Manchester United. However his time with them was curtailed by the second world war and he only made one appearance for them before moving to Witton Albion.

He moved to Wrexham in 1950, then to Leeds United in October 1951 and onto Bournemouth in 1954.

A move into non-league football with Yeovil followed before Fidler moved to Hereford United where he spent three seasons.

Fidler was in the team who defeated Queens Park Rangers in the second round of the FA Cup in late 1957. Played in front of 10,131 the Bulls won the game 6-1.

That season Fidler scored 32 goals for the Bulls in all competitions. And in his three seasons with the Bulls he scored 63 goals.

In 1960 Fidler left Hereford and ended his career at Bridgewater Town.

National Supporters Survey

By Organic Bull

The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) recently carried out a national supporters survey which was completed by over 6,400 fans. Whilst the FSF are still analysing the data they have released an 'early overview'.

The survey was internet based and 92.6% of the respondents were male and 37.3% were between 18 and 30. 58.6% earn less than £30,000 and 50% were season ticket holders.

Despite being in a recession just 25% plan to go to less games. In fact 20% said they hoped to watch more games.

50% thought ticket prices were too high and 25% were put off by kick-off times having to be moved for TV coverage.

Of particular interest to Hereford United fans might be the subject of travel costs.

30% of all fans travel 51 miles or more to watch home games and 32% thought travel costs were a 'significant factor' in deciding to watch fewer games.

27% of fans 'cited disillusionment with football in general' as a reason for watching less matches.

Finally the three subjects that usually come up in fans surveys - stewards, police and the stand up and/or sit down question.

54% said they had witnesses unfair stewarding in the past five years and 46% unfair policing.

50% of fans said they would prefer to stand if the option was available and of those 50% around three quarters have been told to sit down when they wanted to stand.

As the FSF commented - which other industry has to harass its 'consumers' into not doing something they actually want to do? We can't think of one.

More on this survey in the lastest edition of The Football Supporter, the official magazine of the FSF.

Guinan's Dream - to play for Barcelona

By Organic Bull

Although he admits it won't happen, former Hereford United striker Steve Guinan, now with Northampton, has said that his dream would be to play for Barcelona.

Recently interviewed by boys from Northampton's Gateway School, Guinan revealed that he started playing football in a team when his older brother was short of players.

"My very first memory of playing football when I was four years old

"My Dad ran the club's football team with my older brother and he was a few players short so I joined them on a Saturday morning. That's how I started off.

"When I was sixteen I joined Nottingham Forest."

Asked what team he would like to play for the rest of his career, Guinan commented:

"If I was ever good enough I've always been an Aston Villa fan because I'm from Birmimgham. So in this country I would say Villa even if I get a few boos.

"If I had the choice abroad I would say Barcelona or Real Madrid

"You know that you are very priviledged to be a footballer. It's always something I wanted to do when I was very young. I think you realise how lucky you are when you have been in it quite a few years."

Sheldrake to referee at Northampton

By Organic Bull

Darren Sheldrake is set to referee Hereford United's next League Two game which is at Northampton this coming Tuesday. It is his first season at this level.

Both the Bulls and the Cobblers have met Sheldrake recently. The Surrey based referee was in charge of the Paint Trophy game at Edgar Street against Bristol Rovers which the Bulls won on penalties.

A couple of weeks later he officiated in a League Two home game for the Cobblers, who were defeated 2-1 by Rochdale.

To date this season Sheldrake has been the man in the middle for 11 games in which he has given out 26 yellow and two red cards.

The Cobblers were formed in 1897 and joined The Football League in 1920 following time in The Southern League. For many years their home was at the old three sided County ground which older Bulls may remember from our FA Cup giant-killing days. In the mid-nineties they moved to the new custom-built Sixfields, which is owned by the local council and provides an all-seated capacity of just less than 8000. Visiting fans are accommodated in the South (Paul Cox Panel and Paint) Stand, which has room for 800 fans. Tickets are “pay on the day” and are believed to be priced at Adults £19, Over 60’s and students £15, U16’s £12 and U7’s FOC (with an adult?). Tickets are usually purchased from a sales window at the away end.

Coaches – HUISA departs Legends at 3.30 pm with a fare of £13 (non-members £14). Bookings through the Club office (08442 761939).

FUNBUS departs Wetherspoons at 3.00 pm with an expected fare of £15. Contact Chesh.

BY CAR – Travel to Worcester and join the M5 north before joining the M42 at M5 J4A. Continue on the M42 remembering to bear left at J3A. At J7A, join the M6 south and then the M1 south (sign London Town). Leave the M6 at J16 then at the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A45/A4500 (sign Northampton West). Follow this road through the first major roundabout and then at the roundabout at the junction of the A5076, take the third exit (sign Ring Road – M1 South) into Upton Road. At the next roundabout, take the first exit and the second at the next. Sixfields will be clearly visible. Distance is around 110 miles and you should allow two hours and a half. There are a couple of sizable car parks at the stadium (£3?). You are advised to avoid parking on other properties in the surrounding Leisure complex as some operate a clamping scheme. Postcode is NN5 5QA.

REFRESHMENTS – The Leisure complex offers all the usual plastic food outlets and the nearest “proper” chip shop appears to be on Main Road in Duston Village. From the ground, go back up Upton Road and straight over the A4500 roundabout then take the first left. The Duston Village Chippy is about 400ish yards.

ALEHOUSES – What do you expect? It’s a pretend community with pretend Pubs, which mainly serve pretend beer. Among the nearest are the Sports Bar which is part of a bowling establishment, The Sixfields Tavern which takes exception to away shirts, the Magic Tower which takes exception to visiting fans of most descriptions and a TGI Friday which also fails to fill me with much excitement. Away from the ground, The Cricketers Arms in Hervey Street has received decent reviews as has The King Billy in Commercial Street. Last season, we visited the Malt Shovel Tavern at 121 Bridge Street and found it to be superb... good choice of ale a very decent food at reasonable prices. This includes the local Frog Island Brewery products along with Tetleys and London Pride on hand pump. The Romany Hotel on Trinity Avenue has reportedly got eight or nine pumps mainly from localish micros along with Westons!

I'm pleased to be through says Boothroyd

By Organic Bull

Colchester manager Aidy Boothroyd gave his reaction to his side's 1-0 win at Edgar Street this afternoon.

"I'm delighted about it," Boothroyd told BBC Radio Essex. "This was no easy game.

"There had been a few noises in the local press that they (Hereford) fancied their chances. They've got a good home record and it is these games that we must win if we're to win a league.

"Without being disrespectful, we have to put these lesser teams to the sword.

"To score when we did was perfect and I'm just pleased to be through.

"I thought we were by far the stronger team in the last half hour.

"I know they had chances and they hit the bar a couple of times."

Reminded that the U's failed to take their chances in the first half Boothroyd said that was a worry.

"You think here we go again, is it going to be one of those days, the cameras are here, the rain is starting to come down, you think there is going to be a Ronnie Radford moment.

"Thankfully we were tough enough to get the result."
